7-OH treatment options
Treatment isn't one thing — it's a ladder. Here's each rung in plain language, and who each one fits.
Medical detox
3–7 days
24/7 medical supervision to keep withdrawal safe and as comfortable as possible. Usually the entry point if your use has been heavy or daily.
Best for: First-time quit attempts, heavy use, or unsafe to detox at home
Inpatient / residential
2–6 weeks
Live on site. Daily therapy, structure, peer support, medical care. Strong fit when home isn't safe or sober.
Best for: Need a full reset away from triggers
Partial hospitalization (PHP)
2–4 weeks
Around 5–6 hours of treatment per day, 5 days a week. A step down from residential or a step up from outpatient.
Best for: Stable enough to sleep at home, still need a full clinical day
Intensive outpatient (IOP)
6–12 weeks
Usually 3 days a week, 3 hours per session. Fits around a job. Often what people step down to after detox or PHP.
Best for: Working, parenting, or in school
Standard outpatient
Ongoing
1–2 sessions a week with a therapist or group. Best for people who already have stability and need ongoing support.
Best for: Maintenance and relapse prevention
Medication-assisted treatment (MAT)
Months to years
Buprenorphine-based medication can quiet 7-OH cravings and stabilize the brain. Often combined with therapy. Not for everyone — a clinician decides.
Best for: Cravings or repeated relapse
